While this list is by no means inclusive of all influential punk bands – which would have hundreds of lists – this list is a good representation of many punk bands that have helped shape a scene in recent years – as well as scenes of sibling goth, emo, and hardcore.
January. The Ramones – This New York band helped me start all over in the mid-1970s and influenced many others to follow in his shoes in his career spanning decades.
02. The Clash – While this band is softer than many of the most influential punk bands of the 70s and 80s, their subversive messages were also able to reach a wider audience than many, it's incredibly punk.
03. The Sex Pistols – Sure, they were more style than substance, and many people believe they were made to create a trend … but what is more influential than that?
04. Bad Brains – The first hardcore band influenced many bands in DC the course of his career. Although it had strong reggae influences, which were one of the definitive hardcore bands of the 1980s.
05. Rites of Spring – Also from DC, this band is one of the most influential bands in the emo genre, and is often credited with starting the movement.
06. 7 Seconds – A straight edge bands first, the player, a pop style of music that many of their counterparts in the scene, but were instrumental in starting off.
07. Minor Threat – This band really brought the masses straight edge punk, not a single album of songs drinking, smoking or drug use.
08. The Stooges – Mixing garage rock and punk, this band together the various elements to create a unique sound that many have followed in recent years. In addition, the presence of Iggy Pop stage was so intense, it changed the way people thought of the artists punk rock forever.
09. The Damned – Dressed like vampires and spooky music that walked line between punk and what is now known as Gothic, this is a band that pioneered true in terms of re-defining and creating a gender.
10. Misfits – This band from New Jersey, which focused (and still does) in primarially horror themes is essentially the first horror-punk band.
11. The New York Dolls – If While the singer is best known as Buster Poindexter, back in the day, David Johansen and his crew, including the legendary Johnny Thunders, pushed boundaries and opened minds with both looks and music.
12. Fugazi – When finished Minor Threat, the band's singer Ian MacKaye tried different projects, and a of them was Fugazi. This band is also instrumental in what is known as emo today.
13. The Rezillos – This Scottish band with both male and female voice made fun of punk rock, silly, silly songs, offbeat rhythms. They influenced many bands, including the B-52's.
14. No NOFX – band plus serious in the world, NOFX proved it can play fast, snotty punk rock with a sense of humor, but more importantly, the real talent.
15. Blondie – While that many women would love to win the title of "queen of punk rock," there is no doubt that Blondie lead singer Debbie Harry has, and still looks wonderful in it, even today.
Here's hoping this list helps explain some of the roots and influences of modern music punk rock.
